Victoria Choral Society’s Music Director, Giuseppe (Joey) Pietraroia, has announced his decision to leave his post in May 2012, following the choir’s 77th season.

In discussion with the VCS Board, the Director indicated that his decision was made after careful consideration and personal reflection. He states: “It has become increasingly challenging to juggle my busy schedule. In addition to my increasing responsibilities at Pacific Opera Victoria and duties as Resident Conductor of Victoria Symphony, I have received a number of guest conducting invitations which I am looking forward to pursuing. My decision comes with a measure of sadness. The past six seasons have been rewarding and enriching. I have enjoyed the enthusiasm that the members of the Victoria Choral Society bring to each rehearsal and performance. Their dedication is inspiring and their commitment unfailing.”

During the six years of Joey’s leadership, Victoria Choral Society has doubled in size and performed a number of major choral works to enthusiastic sold-out audiences. The choir and its large and dedicated audience look forward to an exciting 2011-12 season. Maestro Pietraroia has chosen a beautiful Advent program centred on Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity (Lauda per le Natività del Signore) and an Easter program featuring the Duruflé and Fauré Requiems. The choir will end the year as guest of the Victoria Symphony, singing the thrilling Beethoven Ninth Symphony.

The VCS Board is making preparations for an extensive search for a new Director. President Conrad Vanderkamp says: “The Victoria Choral Society has been richly served by the artistry and musicianship of our director. Joey has created a culture of joy within the choir and his devotion to the music and to the singers is evident in each rehearsal. We are looking forward to a wonderful season with Joey and exciting new horizons with his successor.”
