Brian Wismath - Music Director

Brian Wismath is music director of the Victoria Choral Society as well as the Vox Humana Chamber Choir and the Victoria Conservatory of Music Chorale.

Brian began his education in choral music as a chorister in the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, and after completing a Bachelor of Music at Queen’s University, he received a Master’s in Choral Conducting from the University of Arizona.

Brian has a rich choral background. He has served as director of the University of Victoria Chamber Singers and Tucson Masterworks Chorale; as associate conductor of Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Chorus Niagara, and Ontario Youth Choir; and as assistant conductor of Opera in Concert Chorus (Ontario, Canada). In 2006, Brian conducted the Vancouver Chamber Choir as a participant in the Choral Conductors’ Symposium concert broadcast on CBC Radio.

A recipient of the Ontario Arts Council residency grant, Brian recently studied advanced conducting in Stockholm, Sweden, with Professor Anders Eby. During this time he was a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Music and a regular guest conductor of the St. Jacob’s Youth Choir, both in Stockholm.

 

Wendy Stofer - Pianist

                StoferWendy Stofer has been the Victoria Choral Society's pianist since 1992. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Washington and a Master of Music degree in collaborative piano performance from the University of Michigan. While pursuing doctoral studies with Martin Katz at the University of Michigan, Wendy was appointed to the music faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she subsequently taught for five years.

Since returning to her native Victoria in 1991, she has been much in demand as accompanist and chamber musician, and has been guest performer at the Old Schoolhouse Concert series and the Hornby Festival. In the summer of 2007, Wendy was one of the official festival pianists for the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest 2007 in Vancouver. She is also collaborative pianist with the Summer Flute Academy at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Wendy is the 2008 recipient of the Joyce O. Maguire Award for Outstanding Long Term Service as a Choral Accompanist.
